The Shetland Sheepdog goes by the most common name of "Shelties" but are sometimes called toonies from their Scottish heritage is a medium size, alert rough coated herding breed. He closely resembles the Collie in miniature but is an entirely separate breed. The AKC official standard requires that the Sheltie be "sound, sturdy and agile" thereby assuring one of the hardest of all registered breeds. Though initially he may be reserved with strangers, he becomes warm and loving with family.
